Big Rain Coming

Upcoming: Big Rain Coming

Big Rain Coming is the name of an exhibition by Roebourne Art Group. The title is inspired by a song by Yinjibarndi woman Tootsie Daniels, who sings about Yinjibarndi country, around Millstream in the Pilbara tableland. This book is about Yinjibarndi country and Ngarluma country and it is about Roebourne Art Group. The artists in Roebourne Art Group have been painting together for a long time and now, in the green season when the thunderclouds build on the horizon, their big rain is coming: with exhibitions, a new art centre and a training program: one which has led to a collection of stunning public art pieces made with the artists’ own hands, minds and stories.

In 2010 FORM entered into an exciting new partnership with public art design and manufacture specialists, Urban Art Projects (UAP). This symbiotic collaboration is aimed at bringing better economic, creative and cultural opportunity to artists across Western Australia, with a particular focus in remote and regional areas. The partnership has developed ENHANCE: a unique model for the creative development and engagement of visual artists looking to explore 3D arts practice for the first time. The model is designed to enhance learning and economic opportunities for artists while enhancing the built environment through place-appropriate public art.

This exhibition showcases the development process that the Roebourne Art Group artists have undergone through the ENHANCE model, their new paintings and sculpture and also features a film of the artists and their country by Michael Fletcher.

You can view the exhibition catalogue here.

The exhibition runs 27 May until 26 August 2011
