RANGE: GILES BETTISON

November 13, 2008 - January 25, 2009.

All of the work is related, each piece drives all the others, sometimes it is like perpetual motion. Looking closely is the key. - Giles Bettison, 2008

South Australian glass artist Giles Bettison came to FORM Gallery hot on the heals of his successful exhibition at the Jam Factory, Adelaide.

Through Range, Bettison draws on his unique and pioneering adaptation of the time-honoured Italian traditions of Murrine glass - a technique that reveals the patterns or images made in a glass cane when cut in cross-sections.

Inspired by textiles, lace-making and maps, but also reminiscent of the minute details of micro-organisms and living matter, Bettison’s work is enchanting and mysterious. With work prized in private and public collections worldwide, Bettison is one of Australia’s foremost designers: and a true visual storyteller.

Range was a significant exhibition for FORM. From now until 2010, each FORM exhibition represents a crucial step in the path towards the launch of Midland Atelier, a creative industries development situated at the site of the Midland Railway Workshops.
