KEVIN GORDON: SYSTEMA NATURAE

February 12 - April 11 2008, FORM Gallery

Latin for System of Nature, Systema Naturae was a publication written by Swedish Doctor Carolus Linnaeus in 1735; one of the first attempts to comprehensively classify the natural world. Systema Naturae has since become a common phrase referring to the scientific classification of living things.

In Systema Naturae: New Works by Kevin Gordon, the phrase highlights Western Australian glass artist Kevin Gordon’s fascination with the natural marine environment and recurring mathematical structures in design and nature. Drawn from the artist’s examination of Australian marine specimens including sea stars, urchins, corals and succulents, these works are non-representational yet tell a uniquely significant story about not only the beauty but the vulnerability of our natural marine environment.

Despite his international standing, Systema Naturae was Kevin Gordon’s first solo show in his home-state of Western Australia. It showcased new work and an exciting new direction in his career, the exhibition offered local audiences a rare glimpse into the world of this highly talented and innovative glass artist.

A gem-like synthesis of strange forms, microscopically detailed surfaces and intriguing interiors that refract and magnify – Systema Naturae was a truly captivating exhibition.
