FIELDS OF IDEAS

Charles Landry challenged Perth's citizens to conjure..and transform Perth into a creative city, we at FORM decided to take up his urban quest.

And so Field of Ideas was born.

Within this field lie interwoven elements that are integral to the activation of a creative city. The project combined community ideas and perceptions (‘What is your Perth?' mind map), through consultation ('What ideas do you have for your city?' survey) and collaboration (artist in residence workshops with thought-provoking Japanese artist Junko Maruyama). It highlighted environmental concerns through the installation created by Junko Maruyama from recycled plastic bags, and encouraged inclusiveness and interaction between urban spaces and visitors, residents and workers within the city. Field of Ideas reveals Perth's uniqueness while capitalising on the experiences of other cities through the sourcing of international (artist Junko Maruyama) and national expertise (Professor John Worthington and Village Well).

Field of Ideas encapsulated these themes, moving beyond the traditional concept of the static art exhibition. It exemplifies the essence of Creative Capital, perceiving creativity across every sector, individual and experience. Field of Ideas attempted a holistic approach to urban activation through the project in a hidden laneway shadowed by the CBD through the fusing of social, cultural and tangible intersections with the city space.

The installation, seen in Wolf lane from February 13-26 2008 blurred the line between artist and the public, between producer and consumer, recognising the potential inner creative within every citizen and every city.

So to answer your question Charles Landry:

Perth can be a creative city of and for the world.
