Midland Atelier 5th Anniversary Exhibitions

About Midland Atelier 5th Anniversary Exhibitions

In celebration of the fifth anniversary of Midland Atelier, FORM presented a suite of three exhibitions in 2013. Each exhibition was the culmination of different creative residency programs facilitated by FORM.

Opening at FORM Gallery, Murray Street on Thursday 13 June, 2013, From the Atelier showcased work by Adam Cruickshank, Guy Eddington, Penelope Forlano, Daniel Stewart Hood, Tim Leaversuch, Andrew Nicholls, Henry Pilcher and Nick Statham.  With work by current and past designers-in-residence, From the Atelier offered a collection of some of the best contemporary interior and lighting design to emerge from the Atelier’s Pattern Shop bespoke furniture and object studio since 2008.

Faultlines: Two Artists in Karijini featured work by Nick Statham and David Trubridge.  Perth-based artist Nick Statham joined with iconic New Zealand designer and Midland Atelier visiting resident mentor David Trubridge, to present a range of contemporary designed objects inspired by the imposing landscape of deep-set gorges, jade coloured pools and wild red escarpments in Karijini National Park, in North Western Australia. Faultlines was developed through FORM’s creative residency program, which facilitates residencies and mentorships with leading national and international creatives from a diverse range of fields.

Faultlines and From the Atelier showed until 29 August, 2013, and were accompanied by the launch of the retrospective catalogue Midland Atelier 2008-2013 and the short documentary film Midland Atelier 2008-2013. From The Atelier additionally re-exhibited at the Midland Railway Workshops Heritage Open Day in September 2013.

Opening at Midland Atelier, Yelverton Drive, Midland on Thursday 4 July, 2013, Paper, Cotton, Leather, Flowers, Wood  presented a series of showcases by artists Tanija and Graham Carr, Eva Fernandez, Susan Flavell, Nalda Searles and The Pattern Shop studio. In celebration of the Atelier’s fifth birthday, FORM commissioned new works by a number of leading Western Australian artists with links to Midland. Each artist was allocated a site within the Atelier to respond to, along with a specific material, in reference to the first five traditional anniversary gifts.

Paper, Cotton, Leather, Flowers, Wood showed until 21 July, 2013.

The three exhibitions were seen by approximately 10,000 viewers over their three month run.
