About The Unexpected Jeweller
The Unexpected Jeweller invited four prominent Australian jewellers—Yuko Fuijta, Nicky Hepburn, Pennie Jagiello, and Natalia Milosz-Piekarska—to deliver a series of workshops in the Pilbara. These workshops gave participants the opportunity to explore three-dimensional practice through the use of found materials foraged from the unique Pilbara landscape.
In addition to workshops with the broader community, The Unexpected Jeweller delivered intensive three-dimensional skills development workshops for Pilbara-based Aboriginal artists at the Spinifex Hill Studios.
After completing their residencies the established jewellers and a number of local Aboriginal artists were brought together again at the Studios to undertake an intensive Land.Mark.Art workshop. The aim of this was for both established and emerging artists to expand their practice and to develop concepts for large scale three-dimensional artworks in response to the Pilbara.
As a result of this process, the jewellers participating in the program found their practice moved in unexpected directions. The outcomes from the jewellery workshops and the Land.Mark.Art process will be showcased in a touring exhibition in 2015, which will also feature a new body of work from each of the exhibiting artists based on their experience in the Pilbara.
